Alaska’s largest conservation coalition is now on record supporting a hydro project and a gasline routing option through Denali National Park. “This is all part of recognizing how we get to 50% renewable energy by 2025 and relying on natural gas as the ‘bridge’ fuel”, notes Kate Troll, Executive Director of Alaska Conservation Alliance (ACA).

The clean energy sector grew by leaps and bounds last year — despite the global economic downturn and the brutal beating to the stock market. Revenues from the solar photovoltaics, wind power and biofuels sectors increased 53 percent in 2008, to $115.9 billion from $75.8 billion in 2007 – and are predicted to reach $325.1 billion in the next decade, according to a Clean Energy Trends report released this week.

A Senate committee advanced on Monday bills designed to spur investment in renewable energy projects and foster greater energy efficiency in new public buildings.

With much of the state still reeling from unprecedented energy costs in 2008, lawmakers are pegging affordable energy as a top priority during the legislative session. With the 90-day session about half over, committees are weighing proposals large and small that could increase efficiency, encourage conservation and spur development of more affordable energy sources.

Two state senators have introduced a bill to create a mechanism to pay for Southeast Alaska hydroelectric projects and complete a regional grid. Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, said the bill he introduced with Sen. Kim Elton, D-Juneau, Friday is aimed at securing a long-term energy supply for the region.
