Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, recently posted this release that included news about a $951,500 grant awarded to the City of Unalaska for geothermal work. The U.S. Department of Energy grant is directed at finding an accessible commercial grade geothermal resource at Makushin and developing a 10 to 12 MW geothermal power plant (with the ability to expand to 20MW) for the City of Unalasaka Electrical Utility. The Dutch Harbor Fisherman also posted this report recently that details some of the exploration work. The story notes the city currently relies heavily on diesel and pays about 32 cents a kilowatt hour for power, or about three times what Anchorage residents pay.

More than $60K designated for Alaska projects

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on September 2 that it is providing more than $13 million in loans and grants for 233 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in 38 states under the Rural Energy for America Program. The program is authorized under the 2008 Farm Bill to support clean energy projects at farms, ranches, and rural small businesses. The loan guarantees and grants can be used for renewable energy systems, energy efficiency improvements, feasibility studies, and energy audits. Among the recipients, projects range from funding for replacement of aging, inefficient farm equipment to investments in renewable energy installations, including wind, solar, biomass, and hydropower projects. The four Alaska recipients are:

  • Alascon Precast Shop, $3,700 grant
  • Heavenly Ridge, $3,800 grant
  • Bear Creek Winery, $4,500 grant

NPR carried this report today by Kevin Whitelaw on the resignation of Van Jones, President Obama’s “green jobs czar.

The resignation of Van Jones, President Obama’s “green jobs czar,” comes just as the pace of stimulus bill funding for the green-energy projects he championed is set to pick up. Jones stepped down suddenly over the weekend amid controversy surrounding statements he had made prior to joining the administration — including comments derogatory of Republicans. The best-selling author of a book on the “green collar” economy, Jones was a prominent and vocal advocate of mixing job creation with environmental policy, a vision that made its way into the stimulus bill that Obama signed in February.

WASHINGTON– Marking a major milestone in the effort to spur private sector investments in clean energy and create new jobs for America’s workers, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced $502 million in the first round of awards from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) program that provides cash assistance to energy production companies in place of earned tax credits. The new funding creates additional upfront capital, enabling companies to create jobs and begin construction that may have been stalled until now. Solar and wind projects in eight states were among the recipients.

Green roofs are sprouting up across the country from Chicago to New York to Washington. They offer a myriad of benefits including better indoor climate control for buildings and a more pleasant aesthetic than concrete. The Tacoma News Tribune recently wrote about one such rooftop meadow planted atop an eight-story high former parking garage in Tacoma, Washington.

Eight stories above downtown Tacoma, a meadow needs a beehive. Honeybees are working the dianthus, candytuft and evening primrose blooming in neon shades of pink, purple, and apricot high atop 1250 Pacific Ave. The bees, and a modest population of ladybugs, are the unexpected residents of the 30,000 square feet of green roof that surely is the most colorful in the state.
