Gwen Holdmann, Director for the Alaska Center for Energy and Power at the University of Alaska will discuss some of the cutting edge technology solutions available to meet Alaska’s current and future energy demand. Alaska uses more energy per capita than any other state, in a nation which uses more energy than any other country in the world. Our state’s high energy use is complicated by high energy prices, isolated electric grid systems, and dependence on external supply lines. By developing more local energy resources – both fossil and renewable – we can stabilize prices and reduce our vulnerability while positioning Alaska as an energy leader. From Joseph B. Verrengia of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory: As the market for clean solar power rapidly expands, NREL researchers are investigating advanced concepts in concentrating solar power (CSP) with $5.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding awarded from the U.S. Department of Energy. The new work includes establishing two new facilities and extensive improvements to an existing third facility on the NREL’s research campus. It also will include field testing of new CSP technologies at the Solar Technology Acceleration Center (SolarTAC), a new 76-acre solar test site. CSP uses mirrors to reflect sunlight onto receivers. Unlike photovoltaic cells that directly convert sunlight into electricity, this method uses the sun’s heat to drive a generator to produce electricity. Read more

From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: Gov. Linda Lingle approved a bill yesterday that makes Hawaii the first state to require solar water heaters in new single-family homes starting in 2010. Lingle said Hawaii should capitalize on using natural renewable energy sources to cut the state’s dependence on imported oil. Read more
Solar hot water heating systems are also used in Alaska homes and businesses. The Denali Education Center, located just outside Denali National Park, for example, recently installed a solar hot water heating system. Read more about it at http://alaskarenewableenergy.org/2009/08/denali-center-unveils-new-solar-water-heating-system/ KTUU-TV also carried this May 2009 report on a solar water heating system installed on an Anchorage triplex.
AWEN ANNUAL MEETING (Alaska Women’s Environmental Network) will be held beginning at 5:30pm at the Pioneer Schoolhouse, 437 E. 3rd Ave. This will be an opportunity to look where AWEN has been doing and where the organization is heading in 2010. AWEN will provide food and drinks. Come meet the new board and talk with our founding mothers. For more information, please send emails to awenalaska@gmail.com

RENEWABLE ENERGY IN ALASKA is the topic for the Make it Monday forum from 11:30am to 1pm on the 2nd Floor, Dena’ina Center. In 2005, about 6 percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., including 9 percent of total electricity produced, came from renewable energy sources. What is being done in Alaska to generate alternative energy sources? CHRIS ROSE, executive director and founder of Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP), will discuss what projects are currently in operation to alleviate natural gas reliance in Alaska, and give details on the future of renewable energy development. Pre-paid reservations are highly recommended and are required to guarantee food availability and space. Cost: $21 for members, $25 for non-members Register at https://wcws.weblinkconnect.com/WC_eCommerce/EventReg/Event_Registration.aspx?EventID=765F5X&lk=BX5G5M9U8E1R7D9U562N265E6A.
