By Todd Woody at the New York Times’ Green Inc. blog: The Obama administration on Thursday released new energy efficiency standards for water heaters and other appliances that it said would save consumers $10 billion over 30 years while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The water heater standards issued by the United States Department of Energy are stricter than those originally proposed in December and which had received a lukewarm reaction from environmentalists. The biggest change increases the energy efficiency mandates for water heaters that hold 55 gallons or more of water. Although the Energy Department does not specify which technologies manufacturers must adopt, the new standards would effectively require the use of more advanced technologies like heat pump electric water heaters and condensing gas water heaters, according to energy efficiency experts. Using solar panels to heat your house and water – “solar thermal” power – is one of the most exciting, practical and cost effective uses of small-scale renewable energy we have in Southcentral Alaska. Several systems are already in place at local homes and businesses. Find out more and learn how to decide if this technology is right for you at REAP’s free forum from 6-8 p.m, April 14, at the Anchorage Museum auditorium. Our presenter will be Andy Baker, an independent clean energy consultant, registered professional engineer, and owner of YourCleanEnergy LLC in Anchorage. He has designed several commercial solar thermal systems that are successfully operating in Southcentral Alaska, and he regularly leads educational workshops on this subject. More information here or by calling (907) 929-7770.

From James Halpin at the Anchorage Daily News: The way the city sees it, they’re burning away perfectly good energy over at the Anchorage Regional Landfill. Millions of tons of rotting rubbish in the massive pit near Eagle River create nearly 2 million cubic feet of landfill gas a day. Nearly half of it is methane, which could be converted to an estimated 2.5 and 3 megawatts of electricity — enough, city officials say, to power 2,500 homes. A new request for proposals put out by the city is seeking bidders to undertake the project. Read more
