2009 BCEA Conference: (L-R) Author Paul Sheldon, Keynote Speaker L. Hunter Lovins, REAP Executive Director Chris Rose, and Conference Design Manager Justin Sternberg
The inaugural Business of Clean Energy in Alaska conference was held in May of 2009 at the Dena’ina Center in downtown Anchorage. The conference was the first of its type in the state and was a huge success selling out with over 240 attendees. It featured a rich speaker lineup of renowned energy efficiency and renewable energy experts from around country, including Dr. Dan Arvizu, Director of the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), and Hunter Lovins, of Natural Capitalism Solutions. A host of state and business leaders highlighted the challenges faced in Alaska while pointing the way towards the incredible opportunities for renewable energy resource development in the state. Speakers also cited the best practices for implementing statewide efficiency and renewable programs and policy, as well as the business opportunities and economic benefits associated with clean energy development.
Since the 2009 conference was held in May, REAP has continued to build on the momentum and awareness generated by the conference to meet Alaska’s energy challenges. In August, REAP hosted Iowa Governor Chet Culver at the 5th annual Alaska Renewable Energy Fair. Governor Culver shared the story of Iowa’s strategic investment in wind power and its positive impact on job creation and economic prosperity. In addition, REAP’s Executive Director Chris Rose has been working with a panel of energy stakeholders and the House Energy Committee of the Alaska State Legislature to draft a statewide energy policy for Alaska. He is happy to report that the legislature is moving toward introducing the panel’s recommendations as a bill to be considered in the 2010 session.
Given the growing interest and momentum for the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors in Alaska, REAP believes the 2010 Business of Clean Energy in Alaska conference is an exciting opportunity to catalyze growth for clean energy development in Alaska. Please save the dates, Thursday, June 17 and Friday, June 18, 2010. June is a great time to be in Alaska and we hope to see you here!
