REAP members doing important work in Alaska

Solstice Alaska Consulting, Inc. is a federally-certified woman-owned small business that provides assistance with project permitting, environmental compliance, and grant writing. They are passionate about clean, affordable, renewable energy alternatives for current and future generations of Alaska residents and are proud to be a part of projects developing wind, hydroelectric, intertie, solar, and heat recovery systems across rural Alaska. Since its inception in 2008, SolsticeAK has written over 40 successful grant applications and secured over $30 million in funding to install renewable energy improvements in Alaskan communities.

Wind Energy

With SolsticeAK’s assistance, the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) and the Yukon River communities of St. Mary’s, Pitka’s Point, and Mountain Village were awarded Alaska Energy Authority and Department of Energy grants to install a wind turbine and a connecting intertie to distribute and share generated wind energy between the three communities. The wind project was part of the region’s Energy Vision to provide reliable, clean, and affordable power to their residents.

Recently SolsticeAK also helped AVEC obtain environmental approvals for a new 900-kilowatt wind turbine in Bethel. The new power source added about 2,370 megawatt hours of energy annually to the existing energy systems serving Bethel, Oscarville, and Napakiak.

Solar Power

SolsticeAK secured funding from the USDA’s High Energy Cost Grant Program for installation of a pre-fabricated solar energy system for Pilot Point, a coastal community located on the Alaska Peninsula. The stand-alone power station will produce 34,000 kilowatt hours annually to power the city’s only store and help to lower food costs and increase food security for residents of this remote community. When online, solar power will provide approximately 50% of the store’s annual energy requirements and reduce fossil fuel emissions at the community powerhouse.
