Alaska Power Association Hank Nikkels $1,000 Scholarship
The APA Hank Nikkels Scholarship is geared for Alaska residents attending college in Alaska full-time or part-time working toward obtaining a toward obtaining a doctoral, Master or Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or an Associate of Applied Science degree in power generation/technology. •UAF Bristol Bay Campus: UAF Bristol Bay Campus is offering a distance-delivered class on sustainable energy in Spring 2012 and has ongoing programs. Offered Jan. 19-May 8, 2012 through the Bristol Bay Campus, ENVI 220 is a 3-credit class available to a wide population via distance delivery (internet and phone). This course focuses on energy use and production in society. Problems discussed are mainly related to the extent of the sustainability of current practices. The emphasis of the course is on solutions which revolve around energy efficiency and specific renewable energy technologies. For more information, send an email to cochambers@alaska.edu. AVTEC: The Seward-based facility is installing a 100 kW wind turbine and, this fall, will start a wind energy maintenance technician program to teach operation, integration, safety and maintenance for wind systems in rural Alaska. Program will be for up to 12 students. More information available from AVTEC.
•AK Department of Labor: The Dept. of Labor has been awarded a $3.6 million federal grant to provide training to 700 Alaskans during the next three years in renewable energy and energy efficiency-related occupations. Training is expected to focus on energy efficiency end-user technology and geothermal, hydroelectric, wind turbine and biomass power generation strategies. Stay tuned.
