REAP Communications Director
Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Responsible to: The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with all staff individually and in teams according to program and project needs.

Background: Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) is Alaska’s first and only renewable energy education and advocacy group.  It is a coalition of over 80 Alaska electric utilities, businesses, environmental groups, consumer groups, Alaska Native organizations, and local, state and federal entities that share the goal of increasing the production of renewable energy and promoting energy efficiency in Alaska.  Since its founding in 2004 REAP has worked to educate policy makers and the public through presentations, conferences, public forums and other events, earned media and in person meetings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain REAP website, including frequent updates with relevant news and maintaining REAP’s social media presence on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter
  • Cultivate relationships with local media and pursue both paid and earned media to raise REAP’s profile
  • Help refine and advise Executive Director on Communications strategy
  • Write and submit press releases on important energy efficiency and renewable energy news
  • Produce and publish REAP’s monthly electronic newsletter
  • Send other electronic alerts to REAP’s database on an as needed basis
  • Promote REAP events including the annual Alaska Renewable Energy Fair and Business of Clean Energy in Alaska conference, monthly forums, and other events
  • Keep REAP’s written materials updated and create new educational publications
  • Stay abreast of current news related to energy policy, renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Two years experience in the communications, public relations or media fields
Knowledge of Alaskan institutions and energy infrastructure
Enthusiasm for and interest in the Clean Energy field

Additional Preferred Skills:
Graphic design, website management experience including html, Microsoft Excel, Constant Contact or similar email marketing system, film and A/V

Compensation: This is permanent full-time position; salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include paid personal leave and holidays and employer contribution to retirement.

RuralCAP Energy Wise Program Coordinator
Two Anchorage-based positions coordinating RurAL CAP’s Energy Wise program are now open. Energy Wise provides residential energy efficiency and conservation education and upgrades in rural Alaskan communities. The Coordinators will be responsible for hiring and training temporary employees in villages to conduct energy efficiency home visits and community education activities. The coordinators will conduct week-long site visits to participating communities and provide training, purchase and track supplies, monitor progress, and contribute to project evaluation activities. Req: BA + 1 yr or 5 yrs equivalent experience in related field. Frequent travel to rural AK. Salary: $21.47 + DOE per/hr + full benefits.

Alaska Power Association Hank Nickkels Scholarship: The $1,000 APA Hank Nikkels Scholarship is geared for Alaska residents attending college in Alaska full-time or part-time working toward obtaining a toward obtaining a doctoral, Master or Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or an Associate of Applied Science degree in power generation/technology. AYEA INTERNSHIP: INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE with ALASKA YOUTH for ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION. AYEA is a youth leadership and civic engagement program for high school students from across Alaska to build skills and take action on issues they care about. We host youth leadership summits focused on project planning, community organizing, and political action, and we support youth-led projects throughout the school year. We are currently looking for volunteer interns to lead a variety of projects in 2012. Gain mad skillz in community organizing, navigating the political system, event planning, communication, and/or fundraising. Rural Energy and Sustainability Program Coordinator for AmeriCorps VISTA Leader

Notice: You must have successfully completed one year of VISTA service to apply for this position (AmeriCorps State, National, NCCC, and PeaceCorps programs do not count). The VISTA Leader is stationed in Anchorage and supports 12 VISTA members, who will be spread out across the state, mostly in rural locations. College Student Summer Internships

Current college upper-classmen and graduate students, who are familiar with Native American culture and tribal issues, are needed to support Tribal Energy Program efforts with technical project tasks. College students are needed to assist a cross-disciplinary team to perform specific tasks at Sandia National Laboratories. Interactions will be with Sandia’s renewable energy staff, Native American tribes interested in renewable systems, and Sandia’s American Indian Outreach Committee. Instant immersion in these activities is offered to work directly with experienced and internationally recognized peers. Travel will be required, including field visits to renewable energy projects. Requirements The student applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a Native American, defined as a member of a federally recognized tribe, Alaska Village, or Alaska Corporation (excludes state-recognized tribes; bands or groups; and first peoples of Guam or Hawaii).
