Free Professional Development for Alaskan Teachers
This fall REAP is offering several teacher trainings all about clean energy.
This fall REAP is offering several teacher trainings all about clean energy.
A large part of the work that REAP’s educators do is offering trainings for teachers. We often hear how teachers just don’t know enough about energy to teach it, don’t know what lessons to use, need supplies to do activities, or perhaps a combination of all three! So the goal of the trainings is to provide resources – both supplies and curriculum – and build their knowledge and confidence to use them in their classroom. All courses introduce concepts of energy literacy and lessons from the free AK EnergySmart curriculum but depending on the training may also include renewable energy activities from KidWind and NEED or lessons from co-hosts of the trainings. Read on to learn about the virtual and in-person trainings that are coming up this fall!
November 11, 2022, Anchorage: We are offering several sessions at the Anchorage School District secondary inservice at West High. We have short and long sessions on energy efficiency and renewable energy. Join us and pick up some supplies to use for your classroom!
There is no cost to register and you receive a kit of supplies mailed to you the week of September 19. If you want a 500-level, one-credit course from UAA, you’ll pay them the $79 fee, which is completely reimbursable upon completion of the course! Register by September 18th and complete course materials by December 5th.
Virtual, Sept – Dec: Starting September 19, teachers can attend a completely online, self-paced course through the learning management system Canvas. We are partnering with Alaska Project Learning Tree to offer this course focused on place-based, culturally responsive, outdoor education. The activities are focused for K-8 teachers, however 9-12 teachers are also welcome to register.
*Registration Closed*
The joint partnership added depth and complexity to both programs and built connections between both making not only the learning richer but also more likely that I will teach this curriculum to students.
October 13-15, Juneau: REAP will be presenting at several sessions at the STEAM Conference in Juneau October 13 through 15. We will also have a table, so if you’re there, stop by to meet us and learn about upcoming opportunities! Sessions include “Watts Up: Energy Literacy in K-12 Classrooms”, “STEAM Energy in Southeast” and “Weather Data to Explore Community Energy Solutions”. Session participants will receive a USB of curricula and an electricity monitor.

All participants receive a kit of supplies which are used during the course, reducing screen time. Energy efficiency, solar, and wind activities will be shared in this training. It is also a good starter for those who are interested in participating in the Clean Energy Olympics in the spring. You can view the syllabus here.

The pace was quick but well-done. I liked the interactions of fun and respect between instructors, which led to more sharing on our part. The kits were really, really well designed for intrigue and aha’s!
REAP also offers trainings at teacher inservices and can travel state wide to deliver in-person trainings. There is usually no cost to the district or schools. If you are interested in an in person training, email the Education Director Colleen Fisk to get the conversation started!
These courses are all made possible by funding from Alaska Housing Finance Corporation as part of the AK EnergySmart program and the Office of Naval Research as part of the ARCTIC Program.
Our partners at KidWind are offering virtual trainings this fall as well:
Cost is $150 for each, but 6-12th grade STEM teachers who are taking courses for the first time can use the code CREATE2023 to get $140 off your registration!
