However, these challenges also create a unique opportunity for Alaskans. High fossil fuel costs create a rich environment for innovation. Our uncertain future with fossil fuels provides the opportunity for all of us to become more energy conscious and efficient, and support the development of local, stably-priced renewable energy. Clean energy resources can bolster our economy by keeping precious energy dollars in our communities. But it’s not just about the money. Clean energy makes our indoor and outdoor environments healthier and our communities more vibrant, all while staying rooted in who we are as Alaskans. We deserve a prosperous state where we can afford to live, work, and play.
With this in mind, REAP was established in 2004 by Executive Director Chris Rose, and a group of energy stakeholders that has grown five-fold since then. Today, REAP includes over 60 organizational members representing a diverse coalition of small and large Alaska electric utilities, conservation and consumer groups, businesses and developers, Alaska Native organizations, and municipal and educational institutions. Our objectives include:
- Educating K-12 students in science, technology, engineering, and math through the lens of clean energy.
- Promoting energy efficiency.
- Developing and implementing policies to increase the production of renewable energy in Alaska.
- Building a market in Alaska for renewable energy.
- Fostering and demonstrating stakeholder unity in support of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Alaska.
