Competition Overview
The Clean Energy Olympics (CEO) is a design competition that engages students in the engineering process through the lens of wind and solar energy. Throughout the Spring semester, students in grades 4-12 will build model wind turbines and solar devices with the support of their teacher/coach. In March, the teams will present their projects at in-person and virtual showcase competitions. The top teams in each grade division (4-5, 6-8, and 9-12) will be invited to the World KidWind Challenge in Minneapolis, MN May 5-8!
Coaches Training
REAP is offering multiple virtual and in-person coaches’ trainings this winter:
- December 14, 4:30-7:30pm
- January 11, 4:30-7:30pm
- January 20, 9am-3pm (In-person at Anchorage Museum, lunch included)
Interested coaches only need to attend one training to get all the curriculum and gear needed to lead a team to the Clean Energy Olympics competition. Trainings come with a $100 stipend that can be used for continuing education credits and team support materials. Any Alaskan teacher or non-traditional educator for grades 4-12 can register for a training below.
Competition Showcases
The in-person competition will occur at Begich Middle School on March 23, 2024. Teams competing at the in-person showcase will test the performance of their wind turbines or solar devices, present their design to a panel of judges, compete in an instant-challenge testing teamwork and creativity, and complete a team knowledge quiz.
Students can also compete virtually by testing their designs in their hometown with their coach. Virtual competitors will then present their data and design process over Zoom to a panel of judges no later than March 22nd. Teams will then complete a knowledge quiz after the live presentation is complete.
The Alaska CEO rules and restrictions are adapted from the KidWind Wind and Solar Rulebooks. Teams can use, but are not limited to, any equipment provided by their coaches, including KidWind Wind Turbine kits and solar panels.
