This second installment in REAP’s 2026 Spring Energy Speaker Series, “Grid to Table: Alaska’s Food/Energy Nexus,” centered on our food systems, the role energy plays in them, and what Alaska’s energy trends mean for our future food security. Whether you’re a policymaker, community leader, or simply interested in the future of Alaska, this event offered a unique opportunity to learn, ask questions, and be part of the conversation shaping the state’s path forward. Speakers covered topics ranging from food policy to hydroponics to agrovoltaics and more. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this timely and engaging discussion about the connection between the food we eat and the energy we use!
Food security is a significant public health concern in Alaska, where more than 13% of households are food insecure. This issue is particularly pronounced in areas where rising energy prices contribute to higher costs for locally-sourced food and where dependence on external supply chains for non-subsistence foods leave our communities vulnerable to market volatility.
Our state’s energy and food systems are deeply intertwined—and increasingly vulnerable. In light of all this, REAP was honored to host a timely public conversation with local experts exploring the nexus of energy and food security in Alaska at the Anchorage Museum on Thursday, April 23rd.
