Power Pledge Challenge
Our biggest initiative of the year, the Power Pledge Challenge (PPC), is back and better than ever! This year’s PPC is all about options.
Like year’s past, participating classes will receive an energy efficiency presentation and conduct an electricity measuring lab. From there, teachers can dive as deep as they want depending on time and subject matter alignment. Numerous monthly and project-long challenges allow teachers to integrate place-based energy education into their curriculum with some added incentive. The more challenges a class completes, the more points they earn. At the conclusion of the PPC in April, the top classrooms around the state will earn great prizes such as a pizza party, energy efficiency activity kits, a tour of their local power plant or similar activity, and the grand prize classroom energy exploration kit from NEED.org.
Visit the newly remodeled AK EnergySmart website to learn more and register your class(es) for the Power Pledge Challenge!

The STEM Education team had so much fun with the 365 SMART Academy last spring that we offered our Solar Energy Engineering course again!
The 365 SMART Academy offers virtual courses for homeschool families to supplement their academic curriculum. Students enrolled in Solar Energy Engineering learned about solar photovoltaic (PV) technology and its many applications in Alaska. Students simultaneously learned about basic circuitry and used their knowledge to construct a solar structure. Participants received a box containing all the solar panels, loads, and connectors they needed to build their renewable-powered structure and then showcased their projects to the class at the end of the course.
Thank you to all of the students who made the Fall 2021 course so amazing! If you missed out this fall, we will host the five-week session again in the Spring. Registration for Spring Solar Energy Engineering opens December 7th on the 365 SMART Academy website.

Everyone knows about Tokyo 2021 and Beijing 2022. But don’t forget about another exciting event unknown to most sports aficionados: the 2022 Clean Energy Olympics! The 2021 Clean Energy Olympics (CEO) was a resounding success and we hope to increase our efforts in 2022 by spreading the word early.
Throughout the semester, students will follow the engineering design process to test and improve their projects. There will be live virtual events in which students can provide updates on their projects, network with other students and current professionals and/or researchers in each of the categories, and seek support from REAP staff to guide them through the engineering process.
REAP will offer multiple teacher training courses so teachers can gain free continuing education credits AND materials to help aid student success in the Clean Energy Olympics.
Visit the Clean Energy Olympics page on the REAP website for more information or email Colleen Fisk to inquire about registering for a teacher training.
