Free curriculum for Alaskans

AK EnergySmart is a free curriculum developed in Alaska for Alaskans. It guides Alaskan youth to a better awareness of how they use energy, and the importance of taking measures to use energy wisely both at home and school.

Through interdisciplinary, STEM-based lessons, students investigate the energy all around us, why we need energy, and how it can be conserved. The K-12 lessons are broken down by grade level, are easy-to-use and meet Alaska educational content standards. These resources are free and available online.

Since 2012, four large school districts have adopted our curriculum and 500 educators have been trained.

Curriculum

The AK EnergySmart (AKES) curriculum helps students find answers to many essential questions, including:

  • What are various forms and sources of energy?
  • How do I use energy every day?
  • Why should I care about energy efficiency and conservation?
  • What direct steps can I take in my home or school to lower consumption?

History & Impact

In 2011-2012, REAP and our colleagues at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks developed AKEnergySmart with funding from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC).

Since then, we have contracted with AHFC to provide classrooms with demonstration lessons, organize the Power Pledge Challenge, update the curriculum, train teachers to use the curriculum, deliver public presentations and more.

Four large school districts in the state have adopted AKES as a supplemental curriculum: Anchorage, Juneau, Kenai Peninsula and Fairbanks. Since 2012, we have also provided teacher trainings to more than 500 educators in Anchorage, Bethel, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Kokhanok, Kodiak, Nome, Sand Point, Sitka, Soldotna and Utqiagvik.
