REAP Job Announcement:

Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) is seeking an educator to join its clean energy education and training team on a part-time basis for the 2024-2025 school year. The Energy Educator will assist with REAP’s education and outreach efforts to K-12 students, educators, and adults including outreach to schools and curriculum development and review.

Location: Anchorage, Alaska, and Virtual. The Educator will be expected to visit classrooms in the Anchorage School District (ASD) and may use space in REAP’s offices or virtually when not in schools or other outreach.

Responsible to: The Energy Educator reports to the Energy Education Director and works closely with other education and training staff according to program and project needs.

Background: Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) is Alaska’s first and only group dedicated to clean energy education and advocacy. REAP is a coalition of over 60 businesses, clean energy developers, electric utilities, conservation groups, Alaska Native organizations, educational institutions and local governments that share REAP’s mission of increasing the production of renewable energy and promoting energy efficiency (together “clean energy”) in Alaska. Since its founding in 2004, REAP has worked to educate policy makers and the public through presentations, conferences, classroom education, public forums, earned media, in-person meetings and other events.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Deliver energy efficiency lessons to 4th-12th grade students in the Anchorage School District (ASD) as part of the Power Pledge Challenge.
  • Use REAP materials and supplies to table at STEM nights in ASD (occasional evening work).
  • Deliver other renewable energy and energy efficiency lessons to students in ASD.
  • Assist with educator trainings (may include occasional evening and weekend work).
  • Review and update select lessons in the AK EnergySmart curriculum.
  • Assist with delivering educator trainings.
  • Assist with planning for the Clean Energy Olympics and other youth educational events.
  • Assist the Education Director with reviewing program outreach materials.
  • Help develop and implement appropriate educational assessment tools with respect to energy literacy.
  • Design new online and print resources for educators to supplement existing curricula resources.
  • Other related responsibilities as delegated by the Education Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or five years of experience in a relevant field
  • Experience teaching in Alaska K-12 classrooms, and/or other relevant teaching, professional or educational background
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Well organized and able to meet multiple deadlines
  • Developing or editing K-12 curriculum, especially incorporating Indigenous Knowledge
  • Personal vehicle and current valid driver’s license to travel throughout the Anchorage bowl

Additional Preferred Experience:

  • Holds or has held a state teaching license
  • Attended a REAP educator training or workshop
  • Experience teaching or working with diverse populations
  • Experience delivering professional presentations or workshops to diverse audiences
  • Knowledge of Alaskan energy infrastructure and institutions
  • Experience with multi-media technologies
  • Experience working with non-profits
  • Experience using Mac computing platforms
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign or other design programs
  • Experience using online contact and communication database systems
  • Experience using meeting platforms such as Zoom, Go To Webinar, Google Meet, et cetera

Compensation: The Energy Educator will be an hourly employee paid at $25-50/hour dependent on experience. The Energy Educator will work between 10 to 20 hours per week through the end of the ASD school year, with exact schedule developed by the Energy Education Director. Part time employees are not eligible for benefits from REAP.

Start Date and Term: The position has flexible start and end times. Applicants will preferably start around August 1, 2024, with end date around the end of the ASD school year on May 23, 2025. Occasional evening and weekend work is part of this position.
