Beneficial Electrification for Southeast
Sealaska recently joined forces with Alaska Power and Telephone (AP&T) to boost the adoption of clean, safe efficient air source heat pumps to heat homes in communities served by AP&T.
By adding a $500 rebate for shareholders to AP&T’s existing $500 heat pump rebate, Sealaska is helping move small southeast communities toward greater energy independence by replacing expensive imported heating oil with safe, clean, local renewable energy.
And the timing couldn’t be much better as recent advances in heat pump technology coincide with the arrival of new hydro power in the region.

Hiilangaay is the Haida owned hydro power generating facility that just came on line this year. Haida Energy sells the output from its 5 Mega Watt turbines to Alaska Power & Telephone for distribution across Prince of Wales Island – with energy to spare.
Commissioned in January this year, Hiilangaay is helping provide 100% clean renewable energy to most communities on America’s 4th largest island. As of late November, Hiilangaay has already displaced more than 110,000 gallons of expensive imported diesel the isolated communities had depended on for electrical generation.
Utilizing renewable electricity to power efficient heat pumps is one example of beneficial electrification. Providing this $1,000 incentive for Sealaska shareholders served by AP&T means that even more people can afford to install a heat pump, and enjoy all the benefits of a clean, energy efficient heat source.
