Awaken the engineering-design mindset in your students at the 2023 Clean Energy Olympics!

Competition Overview

The Clean Energy Olympics (CEO) is a design competition that engages students in the engineering process through the lens of wind energy. Throughout the Spring semester, students in grades 4-12 will build model wind turbines with the help of their teacher/coach. In April, the teams will present their projects at in-person and virtual showcase competitions. The top two teams in each grade division (4-5, 6-8, and 9-12) will be invited to the National KidWind Challenge in Boulder, CO May 14-17!

Competition Showcases

The in-person competition will occur at Palmer High School on April 1, 2023. Teams competing at the in-person showcase will test the energy output of their designs in a wind tunnel, present their design process to a panel of judges, compete in an instant-challenge testing teamwork and creativity, and complete a team knowledge test.

Students can also compete virtually by testing their designs using a fan in their hometown with their coach. Virtual competitors will then present their trial data and design process over Zoom to a panel of judges no later than April 6th. Teams will then complete a knowledge test after the live presentation is complete.

The Alaska CEO rules and regulations are adapted from the official KidWind Rulebook. Teams can use, but are not limited to, any equipment provided by their coaches, including KidWind Wind Turbine kits. The official 2023 KidWind Rulebook will be released in January.

National KidWind Challenge

The top two teams at each grade level (4-5, 6-8, 9-12) competing in the in-person and virtual competition will be invited to represent Alaska at the National KidWind Challenge in Boulder, CO May 14-17. REAP will help cover some travel costs for all teams agreeing to participate in nationals.
